Intuitive Living
Did you ever have a strong intuition, something crystal clear? Something you followed up, which brought a significant shift? Here are some thoughts on the topic of intuition, listening to our inner wisdom. This process is labelled in a variety of ways: following up our inner guidance, being authentic, listening to an inner voice, following up an inner promting. I have lived for thirty year in Spiritual Ecovillage Findhorn in Scotland, where listening to an inner voice and acting on it is part of its origin and culture. Here are some personal experiences. Sometimes an intuition arrives as a gentle breeze, stroking my skin. At other times it hits me like a thunderbolt.
Clean the gutter
During the 1990’s I lived in a caravan in the Park near the entrance, part of the Findhorn Community. This was the time before the ecohouses emerged. One day I noticed a damp spot appearing close to the ceiling in the bedroom, moving closer and closer to my bed. What to do? I checked with the technical team, but since it was Friday afternoon, they told me to wait until Monday. That seemed a very long time to wait, with the risk of the damp reaching my bed, including the futon I had bought. Then the thought arose: why not ask for help from the unseen beings? So I stood in my living room, and prayed. I addressed my prayer like this: “To you angels, devas, nature spirits, Buddhas, Gods, anyone, whatever you call yourself, please help!”. The response was immediate in the form of the following words: “Clean the gutter.” I went outside, discovered the small one inch wide gutter. I poked around with a stick, removed the dead leaves and twigs that had collected there, allowing the rainwater to flow away. It stopped leaking! I took a deep breath and felt huge gratitude for this very practical advice, and for the opportunity to listen to this inner voice.
The whale on the Park Maintenance building
Do you know the story about the painted whale on the Maintenance shed? While I was holding an Experience week during the late 90's, two women were allocated to Maintenance as their work department. When asked to re-paint the shed, they had an intuition to do something creative with it. The previous version was a simple wave in blue and brown. They checked their promptings out with their focaliser. Permission was given, and it is still here: a cute whale with a spout, smiling at anyone, and possibly bringing a smile as well. It is such a beautiful example of "listening to an intuition and acting on it", one of the founding principles of our Community. I still remember the giggles and excitement of the two guests.
This is a conference
I took part in a Community event, where around 100 of us played a large version of the Transformation Game in the Universal Hall. At some point, while representing the topic of Spiritual Practice I made a choice to serve the world by choosing an Angel. The Angel or quality of Respect appeared, which resulted in deep reflection, and sharing about the value of Respect. A few days later, walking in the dunes, digesting the high energy of the event and conversations with fellow Community members, there was this voice in my ear saying: ”This is a conference”. I immediately started protesting. “I already have a job, I don’t need more work, thank you very much!” But this voice or feeling persisted. Then I said:”OK, I will follow it up!” It felt like there was a flow of energy going through me. I collected some ideas, approached the relevant people, received permission and support, invited presenters, and in April 2010 the Inspired Action conference took place, with the theme of inner listening and outer action.
Go online
During November 2017 I was facilitating a month long course Spiritual Deepening. While reviewing the first week on a Friday afternoon, one of the participants said: ”This is a fantastic program. The whole world should do this program!” Of course that is lovely feedback. Yet we were sitting there with around 12 people. What took place then was a “hit by lightning” type of experience. I was flooded with energy or a download that said: “Bring this online!”. I followed up that impulse. It took a few years, and was not necessarily all that easy. However, it resulted in a new initiative Elegant Solutions Findhorn, bringing online courses in spiritual and personal development, accessible by anyone in the world. I am still following the energy in the here and now.
The key
The key is both the listening aspect, as well as following up those impulses. Then the intuition continues to appear and be available, and we engage in intuitive living. I hope these stories inspire you to reflect on your intuition, and how you follow them up. I am holding a six week course on the topic, called Listening to your Heart, starting 17 February. Check it out, and you are welcome to join: https://www.trybooking.co.uk/BIFV
